The place intended for the compost pile should be located not far from the house, as well as from garden beds and be easily accessible even in bad weather. The best place is somewhat shaded and sheltered from strong gusts of wind. A very good position for a compost heap will be next to a hedge or under trees or shrubs, such as e.g.. grab, hazel, elderberry or viburnum. However, before we plant an elderberry bush in the garden, we should remember, that the ripe elderberries falling or dispersed by birds leave dark stains that are difficult to remove after being trampled. Even in a small garden, where there's not much room, you need to plant at least two shrubs or trees, which will shade the compost heap.
The paths on both sides of the pile can be paved with paving slabs; this will facilitate transport even in unfavorable weather. All right, if there is a water intake in the immediate vicinity of the compost heap. In case of its absence, you need to obtain a sufficiently long rubber hose. If there is a water tank near the tap, You can use warm and warm water for watering.
The decomposition processes take place best in a pile placed directly on the soil surface. The pile should not be placed on the turf, and even more so on concrete tiles or very compacted soil. On such a substrate, the living conditions for soil organisms are unsuitable. Wetlands are also not suitable for this purpose. A slight rise is advisable, enabling easy drainage of water during heavy rainfall.
In very small gardens there is usually not enough space for a compost heap. However, to use waste and plant residues, they can be stored in various containers made of wood, mesh, galvanized sheet, plastic or concrete. The best solution is to build such a reservoir from spruce boards or poles. We collect waste in the container, to which we add a little quicklime, fertile land and old compost. However, the decomposition of organic residues in the tank is much slower than in the heap. To accelerate it, it is necessary to mix the contents of the tank frequently. After some time, we can also remove the casing and form a prism by adding biodynamic preparations, and use the empty container to collect new waste and other organic materials.
